Welcome! Καλώς ήρθατε!
Everyone's Greece is a little different, filled with special memories and moments. Here's just a few of our favorite things about traveling to Greece.
The Warm Welcomes: You may have to wait until you're well beyond the airport for this one, and back at a favorite hotel or being greeted by friends. And sometimes, in overly-touristy areas, you may have to initiate it by giving a good Greek welcome to a good Greek. That's usually all it takes - a smile, a happy greeting, and suddenly the suppressed natural filoxenia - love of strangers - comes bursting forth. The Sound of Worry Beads Clicking Together/ Tbe Sound of Backgammon Chips being Slammed down: If you love Greece, you know this one well. The sound of worry beads clicking together is, somehow, very comforting, while the slapping of tavli -backgammon - chips against the board in an intense game brings a kafeneion - coffee shop - to life. Greek Drivers: It's dangerous, but you have to admire the sheer crazy, vigor of your average Greek driver, so accustomed to narrow roads, crowded streets, and regular visits to the side-view-mirror replacement shop. It is the anarchy that so fits the greek temperament. Sun & Sea: In Britain we've seen cars sold with a colour called sea grey. In Greece that doesn't make sense. Sea blue, sky blue and what beautiful blue they are. Whatever you love about Greece, being able to talk to the locals in Greek will increase it a hundred fold. |
